Homesteading Part-2

Part-2 Homesteading
The Animals

To read part one the beginning of our homestead journey click here:

Besides living out in the woods when my husband and I homesteaded, some of our favorite memories were of the animals.

I have a little yorkie and on the homestead we called him the "Lizard King".  We called him that because that is how he spent 85% of his time, chasing the lizards or waiting for them to come out from their hiding places so he could chase them. I have to tell you, I am not really sure what was funnier, my yorkie chasing the lizards around or my husband chasing the lizards that ran up the trees.  While I watched my husband do that was funnier than hell!!

One early morning while my husband and I were sitting outside drinking our morning coffee, we looked over and seen an amazing sight. This huge mama opossum was walking across our yard with her little babies riding on her back.  Another morning while we were sitting outside, we watched this coyote running through a section of our woods,  like a flash of lightening trying to get to its home before it became full daylight.

We use to put piles of seeds out for the chipmunks that hung out in our yard. It was so funny watching them pack their cheeks, than run to their home, empty the seeds and come back for more.

We use to have a lot of hummingbirds.  They sat on the tree limbs and watched for when the coast was clear, than dash down get some sweetness from their feeders then zip off back to the tree limbs.  These little hummingbirds were so competitive with the feeders.  One of them got hurt and fell to the ground.  My husband gently picked him up and we tried to nurse it back to health, but it ended up dying.  It was so sad, because we watched the life force drain from this beautiful little creature.  All I could do was cry when my husband buried it.  That was the first time in my life I ever held a hummingbird.

At night there were these huge opossums that kept getting into our compost pile.  Oh, my goodness, everything we tried to do to keep them away never worked.  So my husband stacked a pile of small stones on the deck and when the opossums came back, he would throw rocks off in the distance to scare them away.  Oh, it only worked a couple of times, because they kept coming back and nothing was to going to stop them.

A beautiful site we seen one morning was when this beautiful doe was walking down our driveway with her little fawn.  Honest to goodness it melted my heart seeing something that beautiful.

We use to have this deck walk-way that lead from the house to a little shower room. One night while walking across this deck, my husband turned around and yelled for me to stop!! There was a little copperhead snake peeking up through the spaces between the wood on the deck.  Needless to say, I felt my heart leap up to my throat.  Eeekkk, it still gives me the hibbie-jibbies just writing about it.  A few days later, my husband walks up behind me holding that snake so I could see what it looked like up close! That was nothing new with him~my mother-in-law warned me that when he was a small child, he use to bring all kinds of little critters home in his pocket!!!

I believe one of the most beautiful memories we have about animals on our homestead was, one night while we were lying in bed, we looked out our window and watched this deer that was right under our window. Of course not having any electricity the only sounds you really heard were Natures sounds at her best!  We just laid there very quietly, enjoying watching this beautiful creature. Thank goodness it was a full moon night!

It got to the point on the homestead that seeing wildlife became an everyday thing.  But neither one of us ever got tired of seeing or hearing the wildlife especially at night.  We have heard bears in the near distant, my husband adopted a opossum and named him "Gimp".  It was this opossum that began to show up every NIGHT! We knew it was the same opossum because it walked with a limp and it showed up almost at the same time every night.

I believe the quiet and seeing the wildlife are two of the things I miss most from our homestead.  The only sounds you heard were Natures' sounds, and all you could see at night was what the moon light allowed you to see.  We did have flash-lights but we tried tried to save the batteries. Besides, there is something very magical about the night-time when you live back in the woods.

The Tiny Mouse

I want to share a small story with you of some events I have been having lately.  I have been dealing with a lot of sickness not only with people around me but personally as well.  Trying to understand or make sense of these events have been a bit mind spinning to say the least.  But,  the one part of me that I feel is the strongest is the part of me that is connected to nature and tuning into her messages that she lovingly gives to me.

I am the type of person who honestly believes everything in nature has energy, a spirit in a sense. I also believe we are all connected to this energy.  Since a very young child my connection to nature has only increased to a level that I believe nature is part of my family.  It is a place I receive my energy and my strength from in order to face things that are very hard in life. There are so many different ways we communicate with nature, often it feels like it is telepathically but also through little symbolic jesters.  That is where "The Tiny Mouse" comes in.

The other day I had to stop at a grocery store to pick up a couple things.  As I was walking by a SUV that pulled up in a parking place close to mine; I looked down on the ground and seen something really odd.  I seen this black spot that was about the size of a silver dollar but it was moving!!  I got down closer to see what it was and at first I couldn't make it out. I sat there in awe watching this tiny spot move its tiny arms!! Once I noticed the tail, I knew without a doubt it was a baby mouse! Okay, first I have to admit, I am NOT a mouse fan-Mickey Mouse yes but real mice, NO!!

This beautiful little creature was just there (I think cleaning itself) so I went into the store but could not get that little cutie off of my mind.  I quickly grabbed what I needed from the store and hurried back to my car.  That little mouse was still in the same exact spot AND the lady in the SUV was getting back to her car at the same.  Meanwhile I asked the guy gathering carts if he could help me move something.  Yes, he looked at me like I was a nut case, but he helped me regardless.  I had nothing to pick up this mouse with and it just so happened he had a paper and scooped up the little mouse.  The lady in the SUV was watching us, I guess she was wondering what in the hell we were doing by her vehicle. So I told her and her response was, "WHAT! A mouse grows into a rat, YUCK! But my thoughts were it was so cute and even something that tiny had the right to live.

Meanwhile the guy with the mouse in the paper asked me, "What do I do with it now?"  I told him we could put it in a grassy area close to the parking lot, and that way the mouse would have a chance to live. Regardless, this event made my heart feel good.  I have been away for a couple of days and have not had a chance to look up mouse medicine until this morning. But when I did, it was like a 2x4 hitting me in the head.

Mouse Medicine-According to Ted Andrews:  Mouse medicine brings a lot of questions to our attention that we need to be asking ourselves.  Are you getting lost in big dreams and neglecting your life in front of you? Are you so focused on current activities that you may not be seeing other opportunities opening up in front of you? Are you missing what is right in front of you? Mouse medicine teaches us how to focus and pay attention to the details in our lives.  It can show you how to make small choices that can help you to build your bigger goal. In short, mouse medicine is all about paying attention to what is around you.

The tiny mouse showing up on my path was a message that I needed very bad and still do.  The objective of sharing this is when you pay attention to all of the tiny messages in life, you can learn a lot!!

Wildlife Photography | RedGage

                                                            Americas Bird | RedGage

I took this photo at the Wildlife Center in Athens, Georgia.  This is one of a set of Bald Eagles that were together.  I am guessing since they shared a space that they were mates.

                                                                Bad Hair Day-RedGage

The only thing I could think of to name this picture is Bad Hair Day.  I mean look at that head of hair-sort of funky, sort of crazy, sort of cool-What's your thoughts?

I am sorry but I think this image is priceless.  I took it at a Wildlife Center in Athens, Georgia.  It just so happened I was at the right place at the right time.

I took this photo of a Black Bear who was waiting for his breakfast.  So to keep himself amused, he decided to play with this stick he is holding.  It was just a humor moment for me because my thoughts went to long ago when jailers use to run their cup across the bars to get someone's attention. Can you imagine the bear running his stick along the fence to get the park attendants to feed him?

This beautiful owl is only the second photo I have ever taken of an owl. The owl was a resident at the Hawk's home.  Owl and Hawk are able to share the same territory because both birds are bird of prey and both territorial.  However since the owl is nocturnal it is able to share the same territory with the Hawk because Hawk claims the area during the day.

Wolf Totem

My Spirit Wolf Totem

n the drumming circles I attended, someone mentioned that they were going to have a Shaman Class in a couple of weeks to help people find their "Animal Spirit Totems". I was so excited that I could not contain myself. I signed up and hoped to goodness that the money was going to manifest so I could pay for the class. I honestly believe that when things are meant to be, everything will come together and that is exactly what happened for me and the class.

There was a pretty big group. I knew most everybody but there were a few new people that I had not meant before. It was a one day workshop that would turn out to be one of the most fascinating days of my life.

Finally, I was going to meet my "Dolphin" the animal that I knew with all of my heart that was my Animal Spirit Totem. Little did I know that we are not the ones that choose our guides, our guides choose us.

Hawk- Bird of Prey as Our Totem

this lens's photo

Hawk Medicine is something I am very familiar with. It is not one of my birth animals according to many different traditions, but it is something I know that has been with me all of my life. I came to realize my Hawk Medicine when I was in my late twenties, but did not fully understand it until the early nineties.

So what does all of this mean? Many different cultures believe that each of us carry different spiritual animal medicines. Hawks are messengers from the Divine-They bring us messages in many different forms and it is up to us to acknowledge the message or not. According to Ted Andrews, Hawk Medicine is visionary power and Guardianship. Their cycle of power is Spring and Fall Equinox and the New Moon.

How often do you see Hawks? I know some areas you see them several times a day, every day-does this mean they always have messages? I believe they do in a sense. It may not be a direct message from one your ancestors, but they always have something to teach us.

It is up to us to understand the messages we are given. One of the problems with being an Adult oppose to a child is often we are not able to tap into the "innocence" of believing. As a child we believed without question, but as an adult we question a lot because we try to analyze everything to the fullest.

This lens is about Hawk Medicine as an Animal Totem.

Our Animal Totems

I write about this topic often. Everyone of us have several different "Animal Totems" throughout our life. Often the concept of your Animal Totems is not understood but seen in a different way, which is okay.  Everyone of us absorbs information the way we need to so we can understand it. I wanted to share a few of my own thoughts and a few of my links to pages I have written about this topic.

First, what is an Animal Totem?  An animal totem is the spiritual aspect of an animal that teaches and guides us through certain situations in our life.  They work with us on a high spiritual level to help us co-exist and get through a lot of real-life situations and ordeals.  My knowledge about Animal Totems has came from Elders, my own Animal Totems by visions and deep meditation (also known as Shamanic Journey's) and also a few books.

Throughout our lives, different animals will appear to help us through different situations.  Each animal carries a certain "Spiritual Animal Medicine" such as Deer teaches us to be kinder, rabbit teaches us to listen closely, hummingbird's remind us to be joyful-These are only a few examples.  I plan on writing a lot more pages focusing on each animal, it will take a lot of time, but it will be worth it.

Here are some pages I have written so far.  Please take a look and if you would like leave a message in the guestbook it would be greatly appreciated.  Never be afraid to ask questions, because someone will always try to answer it.
