The Importance of Spiritual Protection

Protection: 1. the act of protecting or the state of being protected; preservation from injury or harm. 2. a thing, person, or group that protects: This vaccine is a protection against disease. Well, I understand everyone knows what protection means. There are many area's to apply this too, there are many concepts to the word in general, but I want to focus on the importance of using protection in the Spiritual/Pagan Concept. Why use protection in the first place? Why do you cast a circle before doing a spell? Why is there a need to shield yourself from certain people?
